There are certain points in the year that mark turning points - the first Swallow of summer for example. For me, the first orchid of the year is always memorable. Taking a walk in the woods this weekend I was optimistic about the botany - less so about the insects given the wind and low temperatures, so I was delighted when the first orchid of the year held a hidden easter egg. It was no great surprise to find the first Early Purple orchids (Orchis mascula), but it was a delight to find these Plain Gold (Micropterix calthella) micromoths cashing in on the early season flowers.
Plain Gold, Micropterix calthella.
