Symbiosis
Lichens are not always that easy to identify, sometimes nearly impossible. Cladonia rangiformis is one of the easy ones, forming characteristic mats on dry limestone soils and on close inspection, speckled with groups of green algal cells on a pale fungal background, "like the pattern on a giraffe's neck":
