Fun with springtails

Vertagopus arboreus

While I haven't managed to produce a decent image with the MP-E 65mm macro lens yet (working on it), I'm still having fun. I discovered this colony of Vertagopus arboreus on in my garden. The adults are ~1.7mm long (scale squares 1mm) with characteristic violet iridescence and pale legs. However, it wasn't until I was looking though the lens that I discovered the little (~0.6mm) violet jobbies - I couldn't even see them without the MP-E 65! I got very excited about these until I figured out that they're actually juvenile V. arboreus - they still have the characteristic iridescence and pale legs.

Happy days.
